mouldingsMoulding is one of the most important decorative features of any room, even though it is easy to forget that it's there.  In fact when moulding fades into the rest of the decorative features of the room it's placed in this means it's doing it's job: to seamlessly merge one section of the room into another.  You may spend weeks or even months in a house before you consciously take note of the cornices between the ceiling and the upper walls, for instance, or notice the intricate carved skirting boards that protect the lower portion of the walls from foot damage.  As beautiful and detailed as moulding is, it's main reason for existing is to make construction seams invisible - and in doing so it often fades into it's surroundings itself.

If you are considering redecorating your home or office or you are perhaps building a new home from scratch and are looking for decorating ideas, mouldings are one of the base features of a room which cannot be avoided.  Many builders will include mouldings in the construction process although these mouldings may be cheaply made from wood or plastic, or may not be designed to your taste.  Most older homes will also already have mouldings featured throughout the house though these can be changed providing the house does not have a listing placed on it.  You'd be amazed at what a change a particular moulding design can make to a room - not only can it effect the period that the room seems to belong to, but it can also make a room look masculine or feminine.  Before you consider colours or fabrics, think about the mouldings - they're almost as important as the bricks and mortar themselves!
